Pagani Design PD1701 Review – A Budget Meca-Quartz Chronograph With Sapphire
Some watches stick around longer than others, especially in the AliExpress space where models tend to evolve quickly. The Pagani Design PD1701 is one of those exceptions. This is a chronograph that has been around for several years, now reaching version five, with even newer iterations appearing with subtle changes.
What makes it interesting is not just its longevity, but how relevant it still feels. At around $70 before tax, it offers a meca-quartz chronograph, sapphire crystal, and a full stainless steel build. It is clearly homage-driven, but it continues to hold its place as a strong value option in this segment.
Design & Case
The PD1701 measures 41.5 mm in diameter with a thickness of 13.8 mm and a 20 mm lug width, tapering down to 18 mm at the clasp. On paper, the proportions feel balanced, but the thickness and layered construction give it more presence on the wrist than the numbers alone suggest.
The case architecture is visually dynamic. The mid-case flank is horizontally brushed and subtly arches from lug to lug, adding a sense of flow. Running along it is a 45-degree polished chamfer that gradually widens toward the lugs, almost becoming part of the lug structure itself.

The lugs are brushed and curve inward toward the bracelet, creating a cohesive transition. Beneath the flank, the polished lip of the screw-down case back is visible, while above it sits a tall fixed bezel, reinforcing the layered construction and adding to the watch’s vertical presence. We’ve covered several Pagani Design watches before, and this one continues the brand’s established design language.
Movement & Crown
Inside the PD1701 sits the Seiko VK63 meca-quartz chronograph movement. It combines quartz accuracy with a mechanical-style chronograph experience, delivering a smoother sweep of the chronograph seconds hand along with a crisp snapback reset.

The chronograph pushers operate with a clear, mechanical feel. The top pusher starts and stops the chronograph, while the bottom pusher resets it cleanly to 12. The movement pulses at 0.2-second intervals, creating five steps per second, which adds to the perception of a smoother sweep compared to standard quartz.
The crown is a screw-in unit measuring 5.8 mm across. It is flanked by the pushers and integrates neatly into the case design, maintaining the tool-oriented character of the watch.
Bezel
The PD1701 features a ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale printed in white. The bezel is finished in a split color layout, with deep blue on the upper half and red on the lower half, adding visual energy without overwhelming the overall design.

It sits relatively tall above the case, contributing to the layered appearance of the watch. The surface finish is clean, and the color separation is crisp, reinforcing the chronograph’s sporty identity. If you’re currently shopping within the chronographs category, there are several comparable models worth considering.
Bracelet
The bracelet is a three-link stainless steel design with an added visual twist. While the main surfaces are fully brushed, polished inner shoulders on the outer links create a five-link visual effect, adding depth and a touch of refinement.
The links are relatively short and slightly rounded, almost bead-like, which helps with light play and improves articulation. In motion, the bracelet has a more fluid, slightly dress-leaning appearance compared to a purely tool-focused design.

Construction uses push pins, and tolerances are average. When stretched, visible gaps appear between the links, which reduces the sense of refinement. However, link fluidity and articulation are strong, allowing the bracelet to drape naturally on the wrist.
The clasp is a stronger point, featuring a milled design with a double pusher release and a solid folding mechanism inside, providing a more reassuring feel in use.
Crystal & Dial
Up top, the PD1701 uses a box-style, slightly domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The single dome introduces mild edge distortion at sharper angles, adding a subtle vintage character without compromising legibility. Under certain lighting, the AR coating produces faint purple and green reflections.

Beneath the crystal sits a matte white dial with a clean, high-contrast layout. Around the outer edge, a printed seconds and fractional seconds track frames the dial and reinforces its chronograph function.
The hour markers are printed elongated batons, keeping the layout simple and legible. Three recessed sub-dials are finished in an ivory sunburst tone, adding depth and contrast. At 3 o’clock, there is a 24-hour register, at 6 o’clock the running seconds, and at 9 o’clock the 60-minute chronograph counter.

The main hands are edged in black for contrast against the white dial, while the chronograph seconds hand is finished in red with a loomed arrow tip. The sub-dial hands at 3 and 9 feature rocket-style designs with lumed tips.
In low light, lume performance is strongest on the main handset and chronograph tip. The printed elements and sub-dials fade more quickly, which aligns with expectations for this category.
Summary
The Pagani Design PD1701 remains a compelling option in the budget chronograph space. Its continued presence across multiple versions reflects a design that still resonates, even in a fast-moving segment.
The VK63 movement provides a satisfying chronograph experience, while the case and dial offer a strong visual identity. There are compromises, particularly in bracelet tolerances, but they are consistent with the price.

At around $70 before tax, the PD1701 delivers a well-rounded package with a level of execution that continues to make it a standout in its category. In this segment of the market, sub $100, small differences in execution often matter more than raw specifications. For example the Sugess 1963 mechanical chronograph is only $70 more dear, but offers an ultimately superior case architecture, bracelet & strap options, and a superior mechanical movement.
