Hands-On: Addiesdive AD2517 — A Compact Chronograph with Vintage Character
Addiesdive has been steadily expanding its meca-quartz chronograph line-up, and the new AD2517 marks one of the brand’s most refined small-case designs to date. It keeps the familiar retro silhouette but distills it into a wearable 37 mm form that blends compact proportions with bold presence. Priced around $60–65 USD (before tax), it delivers a surprising level of detail — from drilled lugs and a domed crystal to luminous numerals — all wrapped around Seiko’s reliable VK63 meca-quartz movement. Design & Case
At 37 mm across and 12.4 mm thick, the Addiesdive AD2517 sits firmly in vintage territory, yet the tall, boxed-and-domed K1 mineral crystal adds visual mass and curvature that keep it from feeling small. Much of the height comes from the crystal itself, which carries anti-reflective coating for better legibility. The shape leans heavily into 1960s sport-chronograph styling — short, down-turned drilled lugs, 20 mm lug width, and a polished fixed bezel with a printed tachymeter scale.

The case sides are polished and convex, catching light in smooth curves that offset the tool-ish geometry. Beneath the flank, a narrow rim of the screw-down case-back peeks through, hinting at the watch’s solid construction and 100 m water-resistance rating. The crown is recessed just enough to preserve the case flow, while 6.3 mm polished pushers flank it neatly on the right. Together, these proportions and finishes create a well-balanced case that feels deliberate rather than derivative — vintage charm executed with discipline.
Movement & Crown
Powering the AD2517 is the Seiko VK63 meca-quartz hybrid movement. It combines quartz precision with a mechanical chronograph mechanism that delivers tactile engagement without the upkeep of a full automatic. The chronograph seconds hand sweeps in smooth half-second intervals, offering the visual appeal of a mechanical sweep while maintaining quartz reliability. The Seiko VK calibres are becoming very popular for their precision and low maintenance appeal, and they are found in budget as well as the premium watches. For example the VK64 IXDAO Chrono.

The layout is classic tri-compax: a 24-hour indicator at 3 o’clock, running seconds at 6, and a 60-minute chronograph counter at 9. Crown action feels tight and confident, with clean threading and direct resistance during adjustment. It’s a compact, well-executed interface matched to the movement’s crisp pusher feel.
Bezel
Encircling the crystal is a polished fixed bezel fitted with a black ceramic insert. The tachymeter scale is sharply printed in white, providing a clean contrast against the glossy surface. Though fixed, the bezel plays a major aesthetic role: it frames the dial, amplifies the domed-crystal distortion, and reinforces the watch’s vintage-inspired silhouette.

The mix of polished steel, ceramic sheen, and crisp printing creates a visually tight and cohesive perimeter — subtle, but effective at elevating the overall presentation.
Strap
The AD2517 arrives on a canvas strap, unbranded but practical, with rectangular stainless-steel keepers that feature soft rounded corners. The canvas is functional, comfortable, and easy to pair with the watch’s casual character. The one letdown is the polished, unsigned clasp, which comes across as simpler than the rest of the watch’s thoughtful execution. A signed or brushed buckle would have brought the strap presentation closer to the standard set by the case and dial.

Fortunately, the 20 mm lug width opens the door to endless strap options — leather rally straps, canvas, or tropic rubber all complement its vintage proportions exceptionally well.
Crystal & Dial
The tall, boxed K1 mineral crystal is the visual centerpiece of the watch. Treated with underside anti-reflective coating, it flashes hints of blue and purple under angled light and offers gentle edge distortion that enhances the retro character. Beneath it sits a dial with surprising depth and polish.
The surface is finished in glossy piano black, rich and reflective, bordered by a white printed minute and seconds chapter ring. Hour markers appear as stylized, vintage-inspired Arabic numerals, printed in white — and fully luminous, a rarity in this price range.

The ivory sub-dials are slightly recessed, each decorated with fine concentric guilloché that catches light subtly. Polished sub-dial hands add a glint of sharpness, while the main syringe-style hands — chrome-edged and lume-filled — maintain excellent proportionality. The central chronograph seconds hand, with its elongated arrow profile, reaches precisely to the outer track.
In the dark, BGW9 Super-LumiNova delivers a strong blue glow across numerals and hands, evenly applied without patchiness — consistent with Addiesdive’s reputation for superior lume application in the sub-$100 range.
Summary
Compact, expressive, and thoughtfully executed, the Addiesdive AD2517 captures the appeal of vintage-inspired racing chronographs while remaining accessible and practical for everyday wear. Its VK63 movement offers both tactile charm and quartz dependability, while the polished case, domed crystal, and high-contrast dial provide uncommon refinement at this price point.

The strap and clasp lag slightly behind the excellent dial and casework, and sapphire would have been a welcome upgrade — but these compromises feel measured rather than limiting. For enthusiasts seeking a small-format chronograph with character, presence, and excellent lume, the AD2517 stands out as one of the strongest offerings under a hundred dollars.
