Thorn SHY027 Review – A Compact Vintage-Style Diver with a Ceramic Bezel and NH35
The Thorn SHY027 is a watch that immediately suggests a different level of refinement within the homage segment. Thorn is not a brand that appears as frequently as some of its peers, but from experience reviewing their watches, the execution tends to land closer to the refinement levels associated with brands like Baltany or Proxima.
The SHY027 follows that same approach. It presents itself as a compact vintage-leaning diver with a stainless steel case, a boxed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and a ceramic bezel insert. Paired with a three-link bracelet using screw pins, the watch feels thoughtfully constructed from the outset. What stands out most, however, is the tactile quality of the bezel and the overall cohesion of the design. Priced at $150 before tax. If you’re budgeting around the same amount, there are a few noteworthy options we’ve already covered
Design & Case
Viewed from above, the Thorn SHY027 presents a balanced and compact diver profile. The case measures 38.8 mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug length of 45.6 mm, and the use of inverted end links visually compresses the overall footprint even further. The watch sits flat and planted on the wrist, and on my 6½-inch wrist there are no overhangs, just a clean integration between the case, bracelet, and wrist.

Most of the exterior surfaces are brushed, with a horizontal grain across the flanks that reinforces the watch’s utilitarian character. Running along the mid-case is a sharp 45-degree polished chamfer separating the brushed flanks from the brushed lug hoods. This chamfer subtly tapers as it approaches the mid-section before flaring outward again near the lugs, creating a gentle sense of tension within the case geometry.
The lugs drop off quickly, helping the watch conform closely to the wrist. The case construction also appears layered. Beneath the flat brushed flank the polished lip of the screw-down caseback is visible, while above it the coin-edged bezel rises slightly. The bezel teeth are brushed and sit just proud of the case wall, offering a slight overhang that improves grip without disturbing the overall visual flow. This piece shares its personality with several dive watches that emphasize vinatge aesthetics.
Movement & Crown
On the right side of the case sits an unsigned screw-in crown finished with a polished tip. The crown measures approximately 6.5 mm in diameter and features a small visible sleeve separating it from the case wall. This spacing provides additional grip without making the crown appear overly tall.

Thread engagement feels precise when operating the crown. The threading does not feel rough or grainy, and the size of the crown makes interaction straightforward. Turning the watch over reveals a sterile fluted screw-down caseback.
Beneath the caseback sits the Seiko NH35 automatic movement. This movement uses 24 jewels, operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. It is a familiar and reliable movement frequently used in entry-level mechanical watches, and here it supports the SHY027’s automatic functionality and stated 200-meter water resistance.
Bezel
The bezel on the SHY027 is one of the most satisfying aspects of the watch. It is a 120-click unidirectional diver bezel fitted with a black ceramic insert. Printed across the insert is a beige 60-minute scale, which visually ties into the dial elements below.
The bezel wall uses a brushed coin-edge design that provides tactile grip. It sits slightly proud of the case by roughly half a millimeter, a small detail that significantly improves usability. Even though the bezel itself is not particularly tall, that slight overhang gives your fingertips something to engage when rotating it.

In operation the bezel feels tight with noticeably high resistance. This is not a bezel that moves accidentally. Each click lands with a defined stop and there is no backplay or looseness at the detents. Between clicks there is a subtle spring tension that encourages the bezel toward the next detent, giving the rotation a controlled, almost ratcheting sensation.
Alignment is precise, and the luminous pip at 12 sits directly on the marker with no rotational drift. The overall result is a bezel that feels deliberate, controlled, and genuinely satisfying to interact with.
Bracelet
The SHY027 comes fitted with a brushed stainless steel three-link bracelet that tapers from 20 mm at the lugs down to 16 mm at the clasp. The inverted end links help maintain the compact footprint of the watch, while the consistent brushing allows the bracelet to blend naturally into the case.
The lug hoods themselves are vertically brushed, and their brushing direction matches that of the bracelet. This alignment of finishing creates a seamless transition between the watch head and the bracelet.

Construction uses screw pins rather than push pins, which is a more robust approach for bracelet assembly. Link articulation is smooth and the bracelet moves fluidly across the wrist. Under tension there is some visible spacing between links, but overall tolerances remain respectable and the bracelet still feels comfortable and refined during wear.
The clasp is a compact milled unit that avoids unnecessary bulk. It offers two micro-adjustment positions and houses a solid milled folding wing inside. Turning the watch over again reveals the sterile fluted screw-down caseback, reinforcing the tool-watch character of the SHY027.
Crystal & Dial
The dial and bezel relationship defines much of the SHY027’s character. From a top-down view the contrast between the black ceramic bezel insert and the dial elements beneath creates a cohesive vintage-leaning visual language.
The ceramic bezel carries a beige 60-minute scale that matches the beige tones used throughout the dial. This consistency ties the external timing scale and the dial markers together visually, producing a design that nods to vintage diver aesthetics while remaining modern in execution.

Above the dial sits a boxed domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. At sharper viewing angles the coating reveals subtle green and purple reflections, adding a hint of visual movement to an otherwise restrained presentation.
The rehaut is brushed and flat rather than sloping inward. Instead it drops straight down toward the dial, forming a visual tunnel that directs the eye toward the center of the watch.
The dial itself appears deep, glossy, and highly saturated. It resembles enamel in appearance, though the listing does not specify the material, so that assumption cannot be confirmed. The layout features a downward-pointing triangle at 12 o’clock, Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9, and applied circular markers at the remaining hour positions.

A minute track runs just below the rehaut. The hands and markers are presented in a beige tone, with the hands appearing to carry a bronze-tinted chrome finish. Branding is restrained, with the Thorn name and logo placed beneath the 12 o’clock marker, while the lower half of the dial reads “Automatic” and “200 meters.”
The dial omits a date window entirely. In this case the decision preserves the symmetry of the layout, which suits the compact dial space.
When the lights fade the watch reveals a strong application of green lume across the dial and hands. The lume is evenly applied, bright, and remains visible for an extended period in low light.
Summary
The Thorn SHY027 stands out in the homage category not through dramatic design experimentation, but through careful refinement of familiar elements. Its compact dimensions, balanced case geometry, and cohesive finishing give it a measured and controlled presence on the wrist.

The ceramic bezel insert, boxed sapphire crystal, and Seiko NH35 movement form a solid mechanical foundation, while the dial design and vintage-toned details give the watch a distinctive identity. The bracelet construction with screw pins and the precise bezel action further reinforce the impression of thoughtful execution.
Overall, the SHY027 presents itself as a compact diver that combines vintage cues with modern materials in a way that feels deliberate and well resolved. Readers familiar with Thorn will recognize many of the design cues also seen in their previous models.
