Pagani Design PD1838 Review – A Square Dress Watch On a Budget

The Pagani Design PD1838 takes an unusual direction for a brand better known for its divers, chronographs and conventional sports watches. With its rectangular case, Roman numeral dial and black leather strap, this is a distinctly dress-oriented design, bringing a different character to the Pagani Design collection. The specification includes a stainless steel case, curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, quartz movement and a framed date display. Anyone considering spending around $120 should take the time to compare a few closely matched alternatives.

There are some attractive details here, particularly the graphite sunburst dial and leather strap construction. However, the heavily polished case, slightly softened finishing and basic quartz movement leave me questioning whether the overall execution justifies its positioning. Design & Case

The Pagani Design PD1838 has a rectangular stainless steel case measuring 32.8mm across, 46.5mm in length and 10.3mm thick. Those proportions give it a relatively elegant profile, with enough length to establish some presence on the wrist while keeping the overall width restrained.

The case is fully polished, and that defines much of the watch’s appearance. Light reflects aggressively across the surfaces, giving the PD1838 a particularly shiny character. For my taste, the finish becomes a little too reflective, particularly when viewed from the side.

The flank is reasonably tall, with gently softened edges and corners. Although the surfaces feel smooth, the transitions lack some of the visual crispness I would have liked. Greater definition between the different planes would have given the case a more refined architectural appearance.

The rectangular shape is nevertheless an interesting departure for Pagani Design. Its curved upper profile and elongated proportions establish the traditional dress-watch character, while the combination of polished stainless steel and a dark strap creates a fairly distinctive presence. This model enters an increasingly crowded field of affordable dress watches.

    Movement & Crown

Inside the PD1838 is a straightforward quartz movement operating at one tick per second. The exact calibre is not identified, but the movement delivers conventional quartz timekeeping with a central seconds hand and date display.

For a dress watch, this arrangement makes practical sense. Quartz allows the watch to remain relatively slim, requires little attention beyond routine battery replacement and suits something intended for occasional or everyday wear.

However, the simplicity of the movement becomes relevant when considering the overall asking price. At just under $100 when reviewed, I would have liked to see a little more refinement elsewhere to strengthen the proposition.

On the right-hand side sits a signed push-pull crown measuring 5.5mm across. Its proportions are appropriate for the case, maintaining the restrained appearance of the watch while providing the usual time-setting functionality.

Pagani Design claims 50 metres of water resistance. The watch also uses a snap-on caseback with basic specifications engraved into its surface, including references to the stainless steel construction and sapphire crystal.

    Bezel

The upper case architecture follows the rectangular outline of the PD1838, with a polished frame surrounding the curved sapphire crystal. This forms an important part of the watch’s dress-oriented appearance, visually connecting the reflective case surfaces with the darker dial beneath.

The crystal follows a gentle downward curve across the upper profile. Viewed from above, this gives the front of the watch a flowing appearance, complementing the elongated rectangular proportions and softened corners.

The polished surrounding surfaces also contribute to the rather reflective character of the case. Light moves freely across the metal, accentuating the curvature and giving the watch a conspicuous shine.

What I find less convincing is the definition of the surrounding case edges. The transitions are smooth to the touch, but visually they appear somewhat softened, particularly where the polished surfaces meet around the corners.

The overall architecture suits the classical styling, although a more precisely defined finish would have given the PD1838 a stronger sense of refinement.

    Strap

The PD1838 comes fitted with a black genuine leather strap, which complements the polished rectangular case and reinforces its traditional dress-watch appearance.

The strap has a padded, cushioned construction with stitching running along both sides. It feels reasonably substantial and gives the watch a more considered appearance than a simple flat leather strap would have achieved.

Turning it over reveals additional finishing details. Pagani Design branding is stamped on one section of the underside, while the other carries a genuine leather marking. These are small touches, but they contribute to the overall presentation.

The strap also uses quick-release spring bars, making removal and replacement straightforward without requiring tools. Two floating keepers complete the arrangement.

The buckle is another positive. It is a polished, milled stainless steel unit with the Pagani Design signature at the tip. The construction feels suitably substantial and matches the reflective case finishing.

Although the strap is well presented, I have encountered better-quality examples on less expensive watches. It is a decent component, but not one that fundamentally changes my assessment of the PD1838. This release makes more sense when viewed alongside the rest of Pagani Design’s current lineup.

    Crystal & Dial

The PD1838 uses a curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Its gently descending profile follows the case shape, creating a flowing appearance across the front. At sharper viewing angles, however, noticeable optical distortion appears through the crystal.

Beneath it sits a relatively shallow rehaut, providing some separation before the eye reaches the graphite-grey sunburst dial. The colour changes considerably with the light, moving between almost black, dark charcoal and brighter grey reflections.

White printed minute chaptering frames the outer section, while large Roman numerals establish the classical dress-watch character. The numerals are prominent and remain clearly distinguishable against the darker background.

The central portion introduces a contrasting textured pattern with a guilloché-like appearance. Subtle stepped transitions between the dial sections add further visual depth.

Pagani Design branding appears beneath 12 o’clock, with “Quartz” printed above 6. At 3 o’clock, a framed date window is sufficiently large to read comfortably at a glance.

There is no luminous material on the hands, numerals or dial furniture. This suits the traditional styling, although it leaves the watch without low-light legibility.

    Summary

The Pagani Design PD1838 is an interesting departure from the brand’s usual sports-watch designs. Its rectangular proportions, curved sapphire crystal, graphite sunburst dial, Roman numerals and padded leather strap create an attractive classical appearance.

The materials are respectable, and details such as the signed milled buckle, quick-release strap and framed date window contribute positively to the experience.

My reservations concern the overall refinement. The fully polished case feels excessively reflective, the transitions lack crisp definition, and the curved sapphire introduces noticeable distortion at certain angles.

The simple quartz movement is perfectly appropriate for the design, although the combination of basic mechanics and somewhat uneven finishing makes the asking price harder to justify.

I like the direction Pagani Design has taken here, particularly the dial. However, the PD1838 would benefit from more precise case finishing to make the complete watch feel as convincing as its individual components.
