Berny AM181MS Review – Super Compressor Style Diver With Sapphire and Japanese Automatic
The Berny AM181MS is a vintage-inspired automatic diver built around a dual-crown super compressor-style layout. The design reaches back to the 1960s, with one crown used for the movement functions and the other used to operate the internal bezel.
There is a lot packed into this watch. It has 200 meters of water resistance, an automatic Japanese self-winding movement, a sapphire crystal on top, a sapphire exhibition caseback, day and date complications, a screw-down caseback, a screw-in crown, and a stainless steel case. On the silicone strap, it also wears lighter than the dimensions suggest. Priced at $150 before tax, at this level of spend, buyers are spoiled for choice, with several strong competitors available.
Design & Case
The Berny AM181MS measures 41.8mm in diameter, 52.3mm lug-to-lug, 13.4mm thick, and has a 19mm lug width. On the silicone strap, the watch weighs 105g, while the stainless steel oyster-style bracelet version would weigh 160g.
From the side, the case has tall, lean flanks machined to a flat surface around the circular dial. It has a strong, industrial feel, but there is no unnecessary bulk in the case shape.
The lugs are straight-lined, strict, and aggressively slanted downward. On my 6.5-inch wrist, there is no overhang on the silicone strap version, which is why this strap configuration feels like the safer fit.
The case walls are vertically brushed with fine, consistent strokes, almost giving the surface a satin-brushed look from a distance. The transition to the lug hoods is handled through slanted bevels, while the lug hoods themselves are radially brushed.
The bevels on the case edges are smoothed, so there are no harsh edges, even though the overall construction remains angular and precise. This release makes more sense when viewed alongside the rest of Berny’s current lineup.
Movement & Crown
Inside the Berny AM181MS is the Miyota 8205 automatic movement. It is described here as a dependable Japanese automatic self-winding movement, with hacking and a 42-hour power reserve.
The watch uses a pair of crowns on the right-hand side, both styled with a vintage-influenced waffle pattern. They are large crowns, but they suit the tall, muscular case flanks well.
The crown at 2 o’clock operates the internal bezel. Its rotation moves the bidirectional 60-minute internal bezel, and the rotation cycle feels consistent and precise. That separate crown control gives the internal bezel a smoother operation and helps prevent accidental shifting.
The crown at 4 o’clock is the screw-in crown. It winds the watch and sets the day, date, and time. The watch also has a screw-down caseback, contributing to the stated 200 meters of water resistance.
Bezel
The AM181MS has an internal 60-minute bezel controlled by the 2 o’clock crown. The internal bezel also acts as the slanted inward rehaut, with the minute track printed on it and a luminous pip at 12 o’clock.
There is also a fixed bezel element on the steel case, adding visual detail around the crystal. It sits with a fraction of overhang and has two distinct facets.
The sloping surface that meets the case is polished, while the bezel edge uses the same radial brushing seen on the lug hoods. That creates controlled light play in a very precise area, without disrupting the wider tool-watch character of the case. Bracelet
The version here is fitted to a silicone strap, though the watch is also available on an oyster-style stainless steel bracelet. The silicone strap version was priced at $80, while the oyster-style bracelet version was priced at $90. The bracelet is also signed.
The silicone strap has an interesting outer texture. Instead of a plain smooth surface, it is shaped to look like it has links, giving it a more structured appearance than a basic silicone strap.
On the inner side, the strap is flat and smooth, with a velvety feel against the skin. That makes it comfortable on the wrist while keeping the watch relatively light at 105g.
The buckle is plain and unsigned, but it feels solid enough and suits the overall practical character of the watch.
Crystal & Dial
The AM181MS uses a flat slab sapphire crystal that sits a fraction above the fixed bezel. It has anti-reflective coating for clearer legibility, and the sapphire exhibition caseback creates what is effectively a sapphire sandwich.
The dial is available in orange, white, or black. This orange version stands out strongly and suits the vintage-inspired dual-crown case. The center of the dial has a waffle texture, with engraved squares surrounding the pinion area.
The applied baton indices and the 12 and 6 numerals sit around that textured center, with a glossy and unadorned perimeter surrounding the waffle pattern. At 3 o’clock, there are two cutouts for the day and date complications, while a shorter lume baton remains present at the same position.
The minute hand has an arrow style, while the hour hand has a paddle-style shape. The seconds hand is dark red, with a lume triangle closer to the tip. It is an interesting mix of hand designs, but on this dial, it works.
The lume is strong. The brightness is good, the longevity impresses, and the lume reacts quickly to light. The bright triangular pip on the internal bezel is also a useful visual touch.
Summary
The Berny AM181MS brings together a lot of features in one vintage-inspired diver. It has a dual-crown super compressor-style design, 200 meters of water resistance, a Miyota 8205 automatic movement, hacking, a 42-hour power reserve, day and date complications, and sapphire crystal on both the front and exhibition caseback.
The case finishing is one of the stronger parts of the watch. The vertical brushing, radial brushing, polished bezel facet, smoothed bevels, and tall case profile give it a precise and robust character.
On the silicone strap, it wears comfortably on my 6.5-inch wrist and keeps the total weight to 105g. The AM181MS feels like a practical, robust automatic diver with strong materials, useful complications, and a distinctive dual-crown layout.
