Baltany S4101 Review – A Premium Retro-Style Dress Watch
The Baltany S4101 is a retro dress watch with a few details that make it feel more usable than the category normally suggests. It has the expected vintage cues — a polished case, dramatic dog-leg lugs, a small seconds sub-dial, and a boxed domed sapphire crystal — but it also brings unusually strong lume into a dress-watch format.
This reviewed version is the light gold-tone model with the black dial. The tone is important because it is not a heavily saturated yellow gold. It is lighter, softer, and better suited to the early 20th-century character Baltany is aiming for. At around $200 before tax, it sits above the cheapest dress-watch options, but the execution gives it more to talk about. At this level of the market, buyers have no shortage of alternatives competing for attention.
Design & Case
The Baltany S4101 measures 38.3mm in diameter, 10.9mm thick, and 45.5mm lug-to-lug, with a standard 20mm lug width. It is compact in length, although the 20mm strap width gives the watch a slightly broader stance than the case diameter might suggest.

The case is fully polished, with no brushed surfaces anywhere in sight. On this light gold-tone version, that polish works well because the color itself is not overly saturated. Light moves cleanly across the bezel line, case flanks, and lug geometry without turning the watch into something too loud.

The dog-leg lugs define the case. They flare outward slightly from the case band, then take a sharp structural bend down toward the wrist. On the wrist, that shape helps prevent the flat case gap sometimes found on vintage-inspired dress watches. The combination of textures, materials, and proportions creates a character shared by several similarly styled dress watches.
Movement & Crown
Inside the Baltany S4101 is the Seagull ST701 automatic movement. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, or 3Hz, with 20 jewels and around 40 hours of power reserve.
The movement gives the watch its small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, which fits the vintage dress-watch layout naturally. The drawback is that the movement does not hack, so the seconds hand will not stop when setting the time.

The crown is a signed 12-sided push-pull crown measuring 5.3mm across. Visually, it suits the watch beautifully. The faceted shape matches the retro character, although because it is small and polished, winding is easier with dry hands.
Water resistance is 50 meters, which feels appropriate for a dress watch with a push-pull crown.
Bezel
The S4101 does not use a separate functional bezel. Instead, the polished case forms a slim frame around the boxed and domed sapphire crystal, keeping the front of the watch clean and formal.
That choice suits the design. The raised crystal gives the watch its vintage silhouette, while the case itself remains relatively slim. The watch gets height and character from the crystal rather than from a thick midcase.

The polished frame also connects naturally with the rest of the case. It continues the reflective language of the flanks and dog-leg lugs, while leaving the dial construction to provide most of the visual depth.
Strap
The reviewed watch comes on a matte black leather strap, and that matte finish is the right choice here. A glossier strap could have pushed the watch into something too formal or costume-like, but this one keeps the overall tone more restrained.

The strap has black stitching along the sides, slight cushioning through the body, and two floating keepers. The underside is also black and stamped “genuine leather.”
There is no proprietary Baltany branding on the strap itself, but the hardware feels properly matched. The polished gold-tone buckle is signed with the Baltany name at the tip, and the color works neatly with the case.

The strap is quick release, which makes changes easy. Around the back, the screw-down caseback has key specifications etched around the perimeter, including sapphire crystal, 50m water resistance, and automatic movement.
Crystal & Dial
The dial is the real strength of the Baltany S4101. At first glance, it looks clean and traditional, but the construction is layered rather than flat. The main center has an inky matte black circular surface, keeping the watch restrained and elegant.

From there, the dial steps down toward the outer section, where the black tone becomes slightly lighter and supports the applied hour markers. The outer minute chapter sits on a recessed step, giving the dial a 1940s and 1950s multi-angle character.
The hardware gives the dial its dress-watch charm. The applied dagger or arrowhead-style indices are individually polished, with small faceted surfaces that catch light sharply against the matte base. They pair well with the matching diamond-cut leaf hands.

At 12, a double marker provides orientation, with slightly extended lume plots. At 6, the small seconds sub-dial has a muted circular sunburst finish, separating it from the matte center.
The small seconds hand is fully chromed and has no lume. When the lights go off, the main hands and the tops of the hour indices glow green. For a retro dress watch, the lume is bright, clean, and surprisingly long-lasting. Collectors already familiar with Baltany watches may notice recurring themes throughout this watch.
Summary
The Baltany S4101 is not just a plain retro dress watch with a polished case. The appeal is in the way the details stack together: the restrained light gold tone, the dog-leg lugs, the boxed domed sapphire crystal, the matte black strap, and the layered black dial.

The dial gives the watch most of its character. The matte center, stepped outer ring, recessed minute chapter, polished applied indices, diamond-cut leaf hands, and separate sunburst small seconds register create real depth without clutter.
The movement does bring one limitation, as the Seagull ST701 does not hack. The crown is also easier to use with dry hands because of its small polished shape. Even so, the S4101 feels coherent, refined, and unusually wearable for a vintage-style dress watch, especially because the lume is not merely decorative.e.
