Militado ML21 Review – Finally an Affordable & Compact Flieger with Sapphire and Movement Options
Militado has been steadily expanding its lineup, and the Militado ML21 arrives as one of its more recent additions, having only appeared toward the end of 2025. What makes this piece immediately appealing is how it leans into compact proportions while still offering a thoughtful combination of materials and finishing. At around $70 before tax, it sits firmly in the budget category, yet it manages to present itself with a level of restraint and clarity that feels intentional rather than compromised.
What also sets the ML21 apart is the flexibility in movement options. You can opt for a Swiss Ronda quartz with a date, or a Seiko VH31 for sweep seconds without the date complication. That choice alone gives the watch a different character depending on what you value more in daily wear.
Design & Case
On paper, the ML21 is compact, and in practice, it wears exactly that way. The 37 mm case diameter, combined with a slim 9.3 mm thickness and a lug-to-lug of around 42 mm, keeps the footprint controlled and close to the wrist. The 20 mm lug width adds a bit of visual presence, but the overall impression remains restrained.

The case construction is defined by contrast. A fully polished bezel sits prominently on top, forming a bright upper boundary. Beneath it, the midcase transitions into a tall, horizontally brushed flank, creating a clear separation between polished and brushed surfaces.

This layered structure continues along the case side. The polished bezel above, brushed flank through the middle, and the lip of the screw-down case back below all remain visible, giving the watch a clear architectural profile. A polished 45-degree chamfer runs between the flank and the lug hoods, widening slightly toward the lugs and subtly shifting how it reflects light. Readers familiar with Militado will recognize many of the design cues also seen in their previous models.
Movement & Crown
The ML21, in this configuration, is powered by the Seiko VH31 quartz movement. This brings a sweeping seconds hand, offering a smoother visual motion compared to the standard one-tick-per-second quartz behavior.

Because of the VH31, there is no date complication on this version, which keeps the dial symmetrical and uninterrupted. For those who prefer a date, the alternative Ronda 515 option introduces it at 3 o’clock but trades off the sweep seconds for a traditional quartz tick.
The crown is a standout feature. Measuring 7.3 mm at its widest point, it takes on a diamond-shaped profile with deep radial fluting. It is a screw-in crown, and while unsigned, its size and geometry make it both visually prominent and easy to operate.
Bezel
The bezel on the ML21 is fixed and fully polished, forming a bright, reflective surface that frames the dial. Its height is noticeable, and it plays a key role in defining the watch’s upper profile.

Rather than introducing additional complexity, the bezel serves as a clean transition point between the crystal and the case. The polished finish contrasts directly with the brushed midcase, reinforcing the layered structure that runs through the entire watch. Fans of flieger watches may find familiar strengths here, particularly in terms of layout and proportions.
Strap
The ML21 is fitted on a brown leather strap, which keeps the overall presentation simple and in line with the watch’s field-style character. The leather surface is clean and unpadded, without additional patterning, allowing the material itself to carry the visual weight.
White contrast stitching runs along the edges, adding definition and tying the strap visually to the rest of the watch. On the underside, there are two floating keepers, and the leather is stamped as genuine, though otherwise left unbranded.

The buckle is a brushed stainless steel unit, matching the brushed elements of the case. It remains unsigned, which feels like a missed opportunity, but it maintains visual consistency with the overall design. Seen in isolation the ML21 stands well, but comparisons help sharpen the picture – Corgeut offers a similar aesthetic and refinement but a mechanical movement at around the same price point.
Crystal & Dial
Up top, the ML21 uses a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The profile is clean and direct, offering an undistorted view of the dial beneath. There is no curvature here, which keeps legibility consistent across all viewing angles.
The dial itself is built around a caramel sunburst finish. Under changing light, the tone shifts from a deeper brown to a warmer amber hue, adding subtle variation without overwhelming the design. Around the outer edge, a white printed minute track frames the layout clearly.

All indices are printed rather than applied, including the Arabic numerals, which gives the dial a flat and uniform appearance. Branding is minimal, with the Militado name and crow’s foot logo printed beneath 12.
In low light, the watch performs well. Blue lume is applied to both the hands and dial markers, charging quickly and remaining visible for an extended period.
Summary
The Militado ML21 is a compact, thoughtfully executed field watch that focuses on clarity and proportion rather than complexity. Its case design uses contrast effectively, while the slim dimensions make it easy to wear across a wide range of wrist sizes.
The VH31 movement introduces a smoother seconds hand experience, and the absence of a date keeps the dial clean and balanced. The leather strap remains simple but appropriate, even if the unsigned hardware leaves room for improvement.

At this price point, the ML21 delivers a cohesive and well-proportioned watch that feels deliberate in its design and execution. yet within this price range, there are a handful of compelling alternatives worth comparing.
