Pagani Design PD-1705 Review – A Bold Meca-Quartz Chronograph with Sapphire & a Rotating Bezel

The Pagani Design PD-1705 is not a new release. It has been circulating on AliExpress since 2023, which in this segment can sometimes make a watch feel dated rather quickly. With budget watches, designs often cycle fast, and what feels current one moment can seem old the next.

That said, the PD-1705 does not come across that way. Even after a few years, it still holds a strong visual presence. It offers a full stainless steel build, a sapphire crystal, and a meca-quartz chronograph movement. It is not without compromises, particularly when you get into the finer details, but overall it remains an interesting watch to revisit. Usually sold sub $100 before tax. We’ve covered several Pagani Design watches before, and this one continues the brand’s established design language.

    Design & Case

The PD-1705 measures 43 mm in diameter with a thickness of 13.6 mm. A noticeable portion of that height comes from the domed sapphire crystal, which adds vertical presence without altering the underlying case structure. The effective lug-to-lug length is 54.4 mm, and this is significantly influenced by the protruding male end links. On paper, it is a large and assertive watch.

Looking at the case architecture, the mid-case is defined by a tall, horizontally brushed flank that runs cleanly from lug to lug. From there, the lugs sweep sharply downward and hook toward the wrist. This geometry is clearly intended to counteract the long lug-to-lug length by pulling the bracelet down rather than allowing it to sit flat.

A 45-degree polished chamfer runs across the mid-case, maintaining a consistent width throughout. This creates a clean, uninterrupted highlight line and reinforces the layered construction. Above the flank sits the polished lip of the bezel, while below it the polished lip of the screw-down caseback is visible. Together, these polished elements frame the brushed mid-case and emphasize the vertical layering. This watch fits squarely into the modern chronograph segment, alongside others we’ve previously reviewed.

    Movement & Crown

Inside the PD-1705 is the Seiko VK63 meca-quartz chronograph movement. This combines quartz timekeeping with a mechanical-style chronograph actuation, offering a tactile experience when operating the pushers. The layout is straightforward, with the top pusher used to start and stop the chronograph, and the bottom pusher used to reset it.

The crown is a signed screw-in unit measuring 6.8 mm in diameter. It is relatively tall, which helps offset the fact that the threads are polished and therefore offer less natural grip. The crown is semi-guarded, providing some visual protection without fully enclosing it. The white notching stands out visually, even if it does not significantly improve traction.

On either side, the chronograph pushers are mostly polished. In use, they deliver a distinct mechanical click when actuated, avoiding any soft or muted feel.

    Bezel

The PD-1705 uses a unidirectional rotating bezel fitted with an aluminum insert. The insert features a black engraved 60-minute scale and a luminous pip at 12 o’clock. Visually, the bezel sits flush with the case flank rather than standing proud of it.

This flush alignment, combined with the polished bezel edge, directly affects usability. There is no coin-edge grip or additional texturing, and the edge itself is smooth. As a result, getting a secure hold on the bezel can be difficult, particularly if your hands are wet.

Once engaged, the bezel rotates with relatively light resistance that remains consistent throughout the rotation cycle. There is no backplay once a detent is reached, though there is a slight lateral shift felt at each click. Importantly, the bezel cannot settle between clicks, which keeps alignment predictable. The action is consistent and precise, even if the ergonomics would benefit from additional grip.

    Bracelet

The bracelet takes on a distinctive single-link visual style, with elongated links grouped together to create a continuous, almost circular appearance along the wrist. This design contributes to a high level of fluidity, allowing the bracelet to drape naturally once sized.

In wear, it feels flexible rather than rigid, with good articulation across the wrist. Construction is handled via push pins, and tolerances are average. There is nothing loose or concerning, but it does not feel overbuilt either.

Each link measures approximately 10.5 mm in length, which plays into the sizing experience. There are no half links, and the bracelet is paired with a butterfly clasp. This combination can make fine adjustment more challenging, particularly if you fall between sizes. Achieving an exact fit may require some compromise.

    Crystal & Dial

The watch uses a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. At sharper angles, a green and purple sheen becomes visible, which is typical of AR-treated sapphire. There is no boxed distortion here, and the edges remain clean, maintaining strong legibility across the dial.

Beneath the crystal sits a matte black inward-sloping rehaut carrying a printed tachymeter scale. This placement keeps the main dial surface uncluttered while still providing functional timing information. The dial itself is also matte black, helping reduce reflections and maintain consistent contrast.

The hour markers are applied circular plots with a chrome-aged finish, accompanied by a rectangular baton at 12 o’clock for orientation. The chronograph layout features three recessed sub-dials, adding depth and separation from the main dial. These sub-dials are finished in a sunburst white to ivory tone, standing out clearly against the darker background.

At 3 o’clock, there is a 24-hour register, while running seconds are positioned at 6, and the 60-minute chronograph counter sits at 9. The main hands are baton-style with chrome edging, and the central chronograph seconds hand is finished in red with an arrow-shaped lume tip. Sub-dial hands remain slim and unobtrusive.

Lume is applied in bright green across the hands, hour markers, and the bezel pip. It charges quickly and is evenly applied, though longevity is moderate.

    Summary

The Pagani Design PD-1705 is a watch that balances bold design with a familiar set of components. Its larger case dimensions and integrated bracelet style give it a strong wrist presence, while the sapphire crystal and VK63 movement provide a reliable foundation.

There are clear trade-offs. The bezel ergonomics are limited by its smooth, flush design, and the bracelet sizing can be restrictive without half links. At the same time, the watch offers a cohesive dial layout, solid construction, and a distinctive look that has remained relevant since its release. Seen in isolation it stands well, but comparisons help sharpen the picture – did you explore the panda chrono Pagani Design PD1718?

Even several years on, it continues to present itself as a compelling option within the budget chronograph space. This watch competes directly with others in a similar $50-$200 price bracket, each offering its own strengths.
