WM Watch WM189 Review – The Rugged Budget Diver That Refuses to Feel Cheap

The WM Watch WM189 is not trying to be subtle. From the moment it lands on the wrist, this is a large, aggressive diver built around sheer presence rather than restraint. At 44 mm across with a broad 22 mm stance, it immediately feels aimed at those wanting a heavier, more imposing tool watch experience.

What makes the WM189 interesting though is the balance it attempts to strike. Despite the brutish proportions and industrial styling, there are flashes of refinement throughout the design. You get polished chamfers, a sapphire crystal, a ceramic bezel insert, and an automatic Japanese movement, all while sitting around the $70 to $75 mark before tax. Naturally, some shortcuts were taken to hit that price point, but the overall package remains surprisingly compelling. Within this price range, there are a handful of compelling alternatives worth comparing.

    Design & Case

The WM189 measures 44 mm in diameter with a 49 mm lug-to-lug length helped slightly by its inverted end links. Thickness comes in at 11.8 mm without the cyclops and 12.7 mm including it. Combined with the wide 22 mm lug width, the watch carries a broad and muscular stance on the wrist.

Visually, the most distinctive detail is the bezel shape itself. Rather than being perfectly round, the bezel uses a subtle 12-sided profile that gives the watch a more industrial and angular appearance. The side profile remains heavily slab-sided with fine horizontal brushing that almost resembles satin finishing.

Breaking up that otherwise utilitarian structure are polished 45-degree chamfers transitioning into vertically brushed lug hoods. It is an unexpected touch of refinement on a diver this aggressive and this inexpensive. The short, aggressively downturned lugs also help counterbalance the large diameter and improve how the watch settles against the wrist. An enticing alternative to this budget diver is the Addiesdive AD2505, also an automatic with a sapphire crystal.

On the right side sits a signed screw-down crown measuring 6.8 mm across and protected by integrated crown guards. Overall, the case feels bold, rugged, and functional, even if the final level of crisp finishing refinement falls slightly short. The design language here will feel familiar to anyone drawn to diver watches.

    Movement & Crown

Inside the WM189 sits the Miyota 8215 automatic movement. It is a 21-jewel self-winding caliber operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. Mechanically, it remains one of the more commonly used Japanese automatic movements in affordable watches because of its durability and reliability.

The large signed crown fits naturally into the tool-watch direction of the case. Its size makes operation straightforward, while the screw-down construction contributes to the overall diver aesthetic and practicality of the watch.

Turning the watch over reveals one of the more unusual features at this price point: an exhibition case back. The display window itself uses mineral crystal rather than sapphire, but it still offers a clear view of the Miyota movement underneath.

    Bezel

The bezel is one of the stronger mechanical elements of the WM189. Despite the polished outer threading, which reduces grip slightly compared to a brushed finish, the bezel remains easy enough to operate thanks largely to its overall height and faceted 12-sided structure.

The bezel uses a blue ceramic insert with a white 60-minute scale printed on top. Oddly though, there is no luminous pip at 12 o’clock and no luminous markings at all, which does feel like a missed opportunity on a diver.

Mechanically however, the action is solid. Resistance throughout the rotation cycle is heavy and deliberate, with clearly defined clicks and strong forward spring tension. The bezel cannot land between detents, and once engaged, there is effectively no noticeable backplay or lateral movement. The sound itself remains relatively muted, making the experience feel more tactile than audible.

    Bracelet

The WM189 comes fitted to a fully brushed three-link stainless steel bracelet that matches the utilitarian character of the case. The links themselves are shorter than average at roughly 8 mm in length, which noticeably improves articulation and helps the bracelet contour more naturally around the wrist.

Construction uses push pins rather than screw pins, and the overall tolerances are fairly average. When stretched, visible gaps between the links become apparent, though this is not especially surprising considering the price category.

Comfort remains quite good thanks to the strong link fluidity and articulation. The bracelet drapes naturally rather than feeling stiff or overly blocky despite its rugged appearance.

The clasp itself is functional rather than refined. It remains unsigned, offers three micro-adjustment positions, and uses a double push-button release system. Inside sits a pressed folding wing rather than a milled construction, which is one of the clearer cost-cutting areas of the watch.

    Crystal & Dial

The WM189 uses a flat sapphire crystal sitting almost perfectly flush with the ceramic bezel insert. The crystal also receives anti-reflective coating, helping preserve clarity across the dial. Over the date window at 3 o’clock sits a fully circular sapphire cyclops, which is an unusual and surprisingly effective detail.

Beneath the crystal sits a sunburst blue dial finished with a horizontal yacht-floor-style texture. The combination of texture and brushing creates subtle light play across the dial without becoming overly flashy. Around the outer edge runs a white printed minute track framed by the stainless steel rehaut.

Applied baton indices sit at 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, while circular markers fill the remaining positions. Each index is chrome edged and filled with white lume. The sword-style handset follows the same chrome-edged treatment, while the seconds hand introduces a yellow lollipop tip that adds a small burst of contrast against the blue dial.

In low light, the watch reveals a dual-color lume setup. The hour markers, hour hand, and seconds lollipop glow green, while the minute hand glows blue for easier differentiation at a glance. It is an effective setup, even if the absence of a luminous bezel pip still feels noticeable.

    Summary

The WM Watch WM189 succeeds because it embraces being a large, rugged diver rather than trying to shrink itself into something more refined than it really is. The broad stance, faceted bezel, aggressive lug structure, and slab-sided case all contribute to a watch that feels unapologetically tool-oriented.

There are compromises here. Bracelet tolerances are average, the clasp is fairly basic, and the finishing lacks the final level of crispness found on more expensive divers. Still, for roughly $70 to $75 before tax, the WM189 delivers a sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert, solid bezel mechanics, strong lume, and a reliable Japanese automatic movement.

For larger wrists especially, it offers a surprisingly capable and visually distinctive diver at a very accessible price point. If you’ve enjoyed this piece, you may also want to explore WM Watch’s broader lineup
